Clean Up EP

October/November 2010 while on tour, I wrote a song called "Do Ask Do Tell" about.. well what you'd expect.. and more. A few days later I realized I wanted to record this song immediately and a few others I'd been playing out live for awhile.

So I called up the usual suspects in Minneapolis and told them I was coming through in a week and booked a couple days at The Pearl Recording Studio.

In true organic fashion, I quickly taught the new song to George Hadfield and Alexander Young and with little preproduction, demoing or much arranging, we hit the studio to see what could happen. Brian Palay, DJ House and a bunch of others stopped in over the course of the 3 days and laid down fun additions.

The result? My new EP! This is my best work yet. No joke. I'm not being whipped by some label forcing me to say this. No one is pulling these strings baby! ;)

I spent so much money and about 6 months recording Whispering Endearments, but for this project I wanted to keep it organic, get the songs out quick and really capture everything that encompasses my live shows while maintaining the full integrity of the songs.

4 songs. Two you know well most likely (Clean Up and Vegas - from my previous shows over the past year) and two are brand new (Home Tonight, Do Ask Do Tell).

I recorded the vocals using The Pearl's 1959 Neumann U47 microphone (yes actually from 1959) - the best vocal microphone ever made. The Beatles used it for every instrument/vox almost exclusively from 1962 - 1970 as did Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Michael Buble and John Mayer. The vocals on this are butter baby! Butter. The extra creamy, salty kind. The kind that grandma Bubby puts in those cookies that make them so darn tasty and you don't know why (until you fall into cardiac arrest).

There's a "gang vocals" section on DADT where I got help from friends who stopped by and sang: Drew Preiner, Mark Schwandt, Ali Goldberg, Gadi Rouache, George Hadfield, Gabriel Douglas and Alexander Young.

I can't wait for you all to hear this and share it! If you purchase it the day it comes out on iTunes I'll love you for forever (and it'll help me pay some bills here in LA - rent ain't what it was in Minneapolis)... and maybe we can get this charting? Just maybe. How would that be for independent music. Pretty cool.

    Much love,

    ~Ari

Clean Up 04:08
Dirty mugs lining my dresser Circle stains remaining long after clean up Clean up Toss in bed until 9:30 Dishes left, my house is dirty Clean up Clean up After my coffee I'm ready to find us work I can't seem to buy you all of the things you're worth It hurts Clean Up But if you give me more time let me figure this out A little more love to ease my doubt A couple more years and we'll reach the top This guitar is gonna give us our way out Please don't give up now Car was towed at nine this morning Minneapolis I need more warning Clean up Street clean up To the impound with the rest of the city This part of town is awfully filthy Clean up Street clean up Making us dinner was never this difficult We don't have the option to go out as often We work until clean up But if you give me more time let me figure this out A little more love to ease my doubt A couple more years and we'll reach the top This guitar is gonna give us our way out Please don't give up now All in a circle all in the round Together we sing around and around

What's the country asking from me Why do i feel threatened to be beside the love of our time On the news I hear people screaming In the streets the bigotry seethes Embracing hate spreading lies Defacing love it's unkind Emancipate your mind Love is what it takes when the hate around you breaks through the sound of Love will saturate our minds I was always taught to be kind Help the ones struggling to get by Do ask do tell if you love Fighting two wars for our freedom From a foreign hate we're undone but a closer hate is right here In our churches, schools, in the mirror Do ask do tell we're right here To stand up Love is what it takes when the hate around you breaks through the sound of Love will saturate our minds

If I had one do over if I had one last try I’m sure that I would place it all on black this time If I had one do over if I had one last try I’m sure that I would pass on another hit this time I’m sure that I would stand with 16 Vegas is my weakness honey
Vegas is my style Wake me when the band starts playing We’ll walk the strip for a while And then play If I had one do over if I had one last try I’m sure that I would stop while I’m ahead this time If I had one do over if I had one last try I’m sure that I would pass on another free drink this time I’m sure that I would stop after three Vegas is my weakness honey
Vegas is my style Wake me when the band starts playing Let’s walk the strip for a while And then play Well I don’t recall the last time that I felt my heart this way
Well this burning yearning love I feel is driving me insane Vegas is my weakness honey
Vegas is my style Wake me when the band starts playing We'll walk the strip for awhile And then play

Ari Herstand Los Angeles, California

Ari Herstand’s most recent offering, Like Home, explores the idea of what home means. And where to find it when the concept has been shattered. In a period when so many have been confined to their homes, this is an exploration that couldn’t be more worthy of the times. ... more
